SwiftScanRF vs Traditional RF Scanning for SAP EWM

Home / SwiftScanRF vs Traditional RF Scanning for SAP EWM

Every warehouse running SAP Extended Warehouse Management faces the same decision at some point: how do operatives actually record what they are doing? The answer has traditionally been a dedicated RF handheld running a green-screen transaction. That approach works, and it has worked for thirty years. It also carries costs that are easy to overlook because they have always been there.

This page sets out how mobile RF scanning on standard devices differs from traditional handheld RF, where each approach is stronger, and how SwiftScanRF compares with the alternatives on the market.

The comparison

Traditional RF handhelds SwiftScanRF
Hardware Dedicated ruggedised RF terminals, typically £900 to £2,000 per unit, on a replacement cycle Standard Android or iOS devices, including phones and tablets the business already owns
Interface Text-dense green-screen transactions, often 40 characters wide, designed for keypad entry Touch interface with large targets, colour-coded validation and inline feedback
Operative onboarding Days of training, with error rates elevated while staff learn the transaction codes Minutes. Guided step-by-step workflows with role-based menus
Integration Varies. Often middleware, a dedicated server or a proprietary connector Standard SAP NetWeaver OData APIs already present in the landscape. No middleware
Platform dependency Varies by vendor None beyond SAP itself. No SAP BTP subscription required
Ongoing changes Typically a consultant engagement for new processes or validation rules Configurable in-house. Adding processes or onboarding a site needs no SAP consultant
Scaling to new sites New hardware procurement plus configuration Add users and warehouses. Configuration is unlimited
SAP versions Varies S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition and SAP ERP Central Component

Where the alternatives sit

SwiftScanRF is not the only mobile option for SAP warehouses. The main alternatives fall into three groups, and they solve genuinely different problems.

SAP’s own ITSmobile. Included in your SAP licence, which makes it the cheapest option on paper. It renders warehouse transactions in a browser on a mobile device. The interface is functional rather than designed, and building screens for your processes is a development exercise. If you have ABAP capacity in-house and simple requirements, it is a reasonable choice.

Established mobile data capture platforms such as RF-SMART, RFgen and Zetes. Mature products with broad functionality, long track records and large customer bases. They typically carry a heavier licence cost and a longer implementation, and several were built to cover multiple ERPs rather than SAP alone. If your requirements span several systems, or you need functionality well beyond warehouse execution, they are worth evaluating properly.

Terminal emulation tools such as Ivanti Velocity and StayLinked. These modernise the appearance of existing green-screen transactions without changing what sits underneath. That is a genuine strength if you have heavily customised RF transactions you do not want to rebuild. It is a different proposition from a native mobile application.

Where SwiftScanRF fits

SwiftScanRF is built for SAP warehouses that want mobile scanning working quickly, on hardware they already have, without adding a platform dependency or a permanent consultant relationship. It connects through the standard OData APIs already in your landscape, so there is no middleware layer to maintain and no SAP BTP subscription to buy. It covers picks, transfers, receipts and stock enquiries across manufacturing, warehousing and inventory management from a single tile-based menu.

It is published by Dragonfly Business Solutions and listed on the SAP Store.

When SwiftScanRF is not the right answer

Three situations where something else will serve you better.

  • You need to run in freezers, or in genuinely hostile conditions. Consumer devices do not survive minus 25 degrees or repeated drops onto concrete. Ruggedised hardware exists for a reason. You can still run SwiftScanRF on a rugged Android device, but the hardware saving disappears.
  • You have heavily customised RF transactions you intend to keep. If years of bespoke logic sit inside your existing RF screens, terminal emulation preserves that investment. Rebuilding it is a project in its own right.
  • Your requirement spans several ERP systems. SwiftScanRF is built for SAP. If you need one mobile platform covering SAP alongside other systems, a multi-ERP product is the better architecture.

We would rather tell you this before an evaluation than during one.

The question worth asking first

Before comparing products, it is worth establishing what your current approach actually costs. Not the licence, which is usually visible, but the hardware replacement cycle, the training days for every new or temporary member of staff, the error rate during those first weeks, and the consultant days each time a process changes. Those numbers are rarely gathered in one place, and they usually decide the answer more clearly than any feature comparison.
